Moab, UtahGrand County Seat
(Settled in 1855)
Settlers left during conflicts with Native Americans and returned in 1876. Two versions of the name's origin exist: one holds that the settlement was named for a region in Palestine mentioned in the Bible; the other, that the name is a corruption of the Paiute name "Mohapa," meaning mosquito water, applied to the region because of the great number of mosquitoes along the Colorado River bottoms. First known as Elk Mountain Mission.
