Virgin, Utah
(Settled in 1857)
Takes its name from the Virgin River, which early Spaniards called the "Rio Virgen." Jedediah Smith, who visited this region in 1826, tried to rename the stream in honor of John Quincy Adams, sixth president of the United States, but the older name prevailed. The settlement was first known as Pocketville because Native Americans called the valley by a name meaning "hole" or "pocket."
